I run into people all the time who, when they hear I am a nonprofit consultant say, “Oh I want to start a nonprofit!”
After spending some time with them I usually find that their was something in their heart that they really feel passionate for and want to do something about. Not knowing what to do with that feeling they immediately conclude that starting a nonprofit is the best thing they can do.
You may be one of those.
So let me ask you ‘why!? Better yet, I invite you to ask yourself ‘why’.
Why do you want to start a nonprofit?
It seems like such a simple question, but it is really very important.
Let me tell you why:
There are two reasons that this question needs to be asked.
First, there may already be someone in your area doing what you are hoping to do.
It’s possible that combined efforts may help accelerate the goals that are in your heart and mind. There are over 4 million nonprofits in the United States.
If there is already someone in your area active in a similar venture, it would make sense to join forces if for no other reason than the fact that you will be competing for the same funds when you ask for donations.
Second, there may be another way to accomplish your objectives rather than starting an organization from scratch. Starting and maintaining a nonprofit is not an easy task.
After the extensive paperwork and the challenging application process, there is the ongoing administration work that must be kept up-to- date and in accordance with Internal Revenue Service requirements.
